Germany’s Lisa Brennauer yesterday won the women cycling’s time-trial world title, beating Ukraine’s Anna Solovey by 18.7 seconds.
American Evelyn Stevens, a former Lehman Brothers Inc. banker who quit Wall Street in 2009 to pursue a career as a professional cyclist, came three seconds further back for the bronze medal.
Brennauer, 26, sat down on the road in Ponferrada, Spain to recover after finishing the 29.5-kilometer (18.3-mile) ride against the clock in 38 minutes, 48.16 seconds. The undulating course had a hill near the end.
“I’m overwhelmed,” Brennauer told Eurosport television. “I just gave it all on the climb and I didn’t risk it on the downhill.”
Brennauer and the 31-year-old Stevens were part of the Specialized-Lululemon squad that won the women’s team time trial three days ago.
Stevens left Lehman in 2007 before the bank collapsed and two years later quit a job helping to manage a $480 million fund at Gleacher Mezzanine.
